Though Shall Not Give Music Away

By Dave Anderson on Aug 28, 2008

I'm stumped. I've read the music industry is on it's knee's but the digital revolution will save us. Someone f%&ken tell the consumers then. When was the last time you bought a CD? Oh it's ok to share music because bands have enough money right?

Doesn't matter, you'll get a break. Myspace for instance that's awesome for being found isn't it? I've fallen into the 'quick better check how many hits I've had today'. Sure as hell didn't sell any CD's today, but mint I have 6 listeners.

Did you know you can also fake hits on myspace? Some idiots actually pay quite a lot of money for this. I had a crack with some free program and you know what happened. I had all these people wanting to be my friend.

You can actually tell who has fake hits on their site. Post a comment. Something really clever, and link it back to your normal website which shows your referer's. If their myspace doesn't show up, and they have 100 song listens a day then you can be pretty sure their aren't real people looking at their site. There's not real people on there anyway. Just other bands. Doing the same thing...trying to get their stats up...and around and around and around we go.

So how am I going to be heard when everyone is shouting "look at me, look at me". Give my CD away for free apparently. No one buys music these days anyway right. Apparently I'll make money touring. Really. Doesn't help when the last venue I played at hasn't paid me. We had about 100 people there that night. That's not bad, the venue was nearly full. Tickets were $10 and their were 9 musicians. Yep...I'll be able to retire in no time. I suppose if I played a few times a week and could charge $20 or more then I'd be ok. But where do I play? How do I get gigs when promoters only promote their own? It's a catch 22.

So if everyone gives away their music then the perceived value of what we are doing is devalued. And then their is just more noise. Myspace, youtube, facebook, lastfm, iphones, blogs...noise, noise, noise.

If anyone needs me I'll be lighting a campfire in my backyard, with a bottle of wine and some real friends. Better send a facebook invite.

This blog post was inspired by "Music Think Tank". He writes a hell of a lot better than me so go have a read.

I guess we are damned if we do and damned if we don't right.

Many may cringe at the mention of developing a coprorate sponsorship promotional strategy.... however considering employing a promotional strategy whichs builds affilliation and sponsorship with products/services which have a good brand fit.. is surely the way the music industry will move, more and more so in. packaged commercial pop is certainly no stranger...but how about the indies??

Some ideas could be broadly leveraged from the hiphop community... like :

Run-DMC - "My Adidas"

Back in the day, of course, things were different. Run-DMC unintentionally started the trend of corporate sponsorship with "My Adidas," an ode to the rappers' favorite sneakers. Following the success of the song, Russell Simmons invited company executives from Adidas to attend a Run-DMC concert at Madison Square Garden in 1986. Simmons promised his brother, Reverend Run of Run-DMC, that they could get an endorsement deal if they took off their Adidas sneakers and held them up during the performance.

When the Adidas execs saw the crowd's enthusiastic reaction, they began to grasp the power of product placement in music. For the next four years, a sponsorship deal worth $1 million annually guaranteed that Run-DMC would never be seen without their Adidas. While Chuck D and KRS-One believed in the revolutionary political power of hip-hop, Simmons viewed the movement in terms of marketing. "The hip-hop community is the biggest brand-building community in the world," he said.

Hey mate,

Completely agree with you. Just need to ensure that it's us indies who are getting exposure to the brands rather than the usual suspects.

I know Levi's have developed their own record label locally supporting local live music. Jack Daniel's also...however I'm not a fan of the 'put your music on a website sponsored by us' get your friends to vote and we'll give you $5k like Tooheys Extra Dry.

Here is a another great blog on the topic: http://www.unsprungmedia.com/unsprung_wisdom/2008/8/25/brands-investing-in-unknown-bands-ten-things-brands-should-c.html

I'd be best to aim for a wine brand I think. mmm...wine and music.

Ageist Music Festivals

By Dave Anderson on

It's hard enough to get a gig these days, let alone one at a music festival. Doesn't make it any easier when you don't have a manager, a record label or an agent. It's even more discouraging when you read that all the special nominations for music festivals are mostly for 'under 25's' or even younger.

I read about the Queenscliffe Music Festival foot in the door program. They say they ask for your age bracket not because they are ageist but because it's got to do with funding. Fair enough. They might not be ageist. But someone is.

As if it's not depressing enough to nearly reach 30.

I'm all for giving kids a gee up, nut in an industry where the best advice has always been "love your music, and just work hard." "Success takes time". etc etc.

Looks like I missed the draft nominations and should retire.

Is their a veterans league?

Is Australian Idol Fooling You?

By Dave Anderson on

Of course it is.

I have to admit I've been watching the show. I get such a mix of emotions watching it. I wonder if maybe I should go on there. Then I hear awesome singers and think...I don't sound that great. But then I here some massively average singers get through with rave reviews and think, maybe I should have. I'm not into the crap manufactured Nova friendly pop that they make them sing when they win, but I suppose at least they get a leg up...

Anyway...

The real reason I posted this blog was not to tell you how I feel about watching the show. But to point out something pretty obvious.

The que's of people waiting to come in and audition are in Redfern, Technology Park and yet the footage is at the Taronga Park, zoo.

Right now I've posted about Idol I can go back to my depressing songs and even more depressing prospects in this hopelessly impossible music industry.

Great Escape Cancelled

By Dave Anderson on Aug 11, 2008

The Great Escape has been cancelled due to low ticket sales. Those that have purchased tickets, can get a refund.

I attended the Great Escape a few years back and had a brilliant time seeing local as well as international acts in a really nice setting.

Although I did find camping in homebush to be a bit weird ; )

Yeah it's a shame. The Blues and Roots has probably killed it off, although it's always expensive to get to compared to the Great Escape and it tends to be the same artists anyway.

New You Am I Song!

By Dave Anderson on Aug 3, 2008

You Am I are set to release their new album in September once Tim get's back from touring the UK. After a stellar acoustic performance at the Annandale (review here), fans of You Am I might see a more alt country influenced album if the pre released title track Dilettantes is anything to go by.

To listen to the new song go to'Who the Bloody Hell Are You - Australian Music Blog.

Best acoustic venue's in Sydney

By Dave Anderson on Jul 28, 2008

I've been living and playing gigs in Sydney now for 2 years or so and I've either played, or been to a number of great venue's in Sydney. For those researching where to play their next acoustic gig, or perhaps for those passive music lovers perhaps you want to head down to discover something new...then perhaps there is a venue below that is just for you.

1. The Vanguard, Newtown

There is something special about this place. The back room for the band is unreal, the red moulin rouge, the sound quality, the attentive audiences, and now a dedicated slideshow backdrop this venue in my opinion is the pinnacle.

For punters the food is amazing, especially the steak and the service is great! It's best to book a table as there is limited viewing towards the back of the venue.

If your an artist then you'd best join the que! This is a really hard venue to get into, probably because it's loved by so many musicians. Capacity is around 90 seated and about 90 general admin, including the balcony upstairs.

There should be a Vanguard in every major city of Australia.

2. The Basement

I had considered to play my CD launch at this venue, however I opted for the Vanguard based on it's warm feeling. I've seen some great shows at the basement, and it's definately another top venue. It's a little bit larger than the Vanguard holding up to 300 people, but it my opinion is just lacks that soulful vibe. It sort of reminds me of that TV show Cheers. Gosh now I think about it I'm being a little bit harsh but I guess when your comparing the Mercede's and BMW's of venue's you have to find a fault somewhere?

I've never eaten there but I hear it's great food. A tiny bit more expensive than the Vanguard but that might be because it pulls in some bigger names. It also has recently had a sound refit with so easy video production capabilities. A great place to see acoustic live music and hopefully a place that I get to play before the year is out!

....slight drop off now but here are my thought's on the accessible venue's for aspiring singer/songwriter's

3. Supper Club

This venue went through a $4 million dollar refit a few years ago under the name of Will and Toby's. Essentially it is two floors, with a swanky top floor and a medium sized middle level capable of holding 120 or so. The stage is quite small, but the sound is really good. Also the viewing platforms for patrons are great with lounges down at the foot of the stage, and raised bar level towards the back. Although this tends to get noisy if you don't pull your audience back to what is going on, on stage.

I couldn't find a suitable image online but check out there website for more information. Pretty classy place.

4. Ruby Rabbit

Ruby Rabbit is a bit of a left field suggestion for great venue's in Sydney. I wouldn't recommend it for bands as the room is quite small, but for an intimate acoustic night this is gold. Think beautifully decorated lounge room, with intimate lighting and adequate sound. It's clean enough for you to park your ass right on the floor up the front. Best of all, the promoter is easily contactable and they don' take any of your door sales.

I've played the bar once before and it was a great night. I'm playing there again soon, but I definately think, it's location on Oxford St, it's cool stature, and size of room warrants a top 5 listing.

iLike itunes social platform

By Dave Anderson on Jul 21, 2008

I stumbled across this nifty application last week. I'm probably a relatively late adopter compared to the web 2.0 guru's out there but I must say this program so far has really won me over. Essentially iLike is a sidebar that attaches itself to itunes. It gathers up what you play in your itunes and shares it with everyone. You can also easily publish a widget, or embed into facebook and myspace.

The best thing about it is it also provides updates for what that artist is doing. i.e I'm listening to David Ford and it says, hey David Ford is touring in these cities and he has added these photos or written a blog. It also then compiles other similiar artists and says...so you like David Ford, well you will probably like this guy, and maybe this one. I guess this is done based on user preferences.

So the weird thing is that I actually iLike myself. Kind of weird. But the thing was another Dave Anderson exists so I had no choice but to email them and explain that I understand my parents gave me a common name but can I also exist as another Dave Anderson. They emailed me back within an hour, set up a page for me and I was up and running.

The only down side is that I've been forced to delete my Kylie album's just incase it comes up on random and then I look like I have no taste. Of course you can configue it not to share these albums but I guess I'm just doing myself a favour.

Brilliant stuff! I just wish I had some friends

dot music or dot acoustic

By Dave Anderson on Jun 24, 2008

I read this morning that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is thinking about extending it's domain names to .anything. It's amazing how sheltered we have been really. Happy to go along thinking out crazy and witty domains with .com tagged on the end. All the buses, the stores, the billboards all painted .com, not to mention the businesses that changed their names.

It got me thinking what domains musicians might go for should it open up and be cheap enough to purchase.

Perhaps .imsoexcellentlistentome or .playingtonightatthepub or even .nothingsweetaboutme

Interesting.

Here is the article: http://www.smh.com.au/news/technology/internet-set-for-domain-name-big-bang/2008/06/24/1214073188092.html

Digital tunes at your fingertip

By Dave Anderson on Jun 16, 2008

HP is set to announce it's new Touchsmart range which I for one am very excited about and mostly for music features.

Firstly, I should point out that I work for HP, all be it in a different area of the business, however I loved the idea of using touch to control my digital albums and as such thought I'd blog about it.

I've found that the artwork is so much apart of the music, and over the years I've found it difficult navigating through itunes. I guess this is why Apple have also begun to introduce more search by album artwork type features, as well as upgrade the functionality of ipods and iphone's to be more visual.

The best thing I think I have seen so far is the new touchsmart 'fan' navigation.

I guess the only downside of touch is of course getting your screen dirty. I wonder if they will come with gloves.

Check out the HP landing page for the new Touchsmare series.

You might also be keen to read my early posts on itunes, artwork and shuffling.

Best song lyrics

By Dave Anderson on May 11, 2008

Had a few drinks at the pub tonight and I asked a few people what their favourite lyrics were. It sparked quite a conversation. Here are a few lyrics that came to my mind.

Epicure - 12 Months of Winter
There's a dark cold, prison cell in my mind,
And so it goes it changes every time
but I keep the cell well padded so I cannot hurt myself
And I keep the key well hidden so I cannot escape myself
Cos it's been 12 months of winter and the sun has gotta come
When you see next love, I'm going to be someone.

Counting Crows - Long December
I can't remember all the times I've tried to tell myself to hang on to these moments as they past.

Pearl Jam - Sometimes

Paint my small self, like a book amongst the many on the shelf.

Gomez - How We Operate
(after been stuck on a label for a while, this was their first line)
I stopped trying to write things I don't like and I started going back to where it all began.

Tim Rogers

So I wrote down what I think, on the head of the matchstick
I wrote it all short and sweet, all that made sense to me
I wrote 1000 lines and I'm sorry for all the times,
I just can't add up to find the damage I've done

Oh..and another...
I'm like a water logged ball that no one wants to kick around anymore

Paul Kelly - From St Kilda to Kings Cross
I'll give you all of Sydney harbour, all the land and all that water for that one sweet prominade. (controversial but agreed).

David Ford - State of the Union
...and the first one it always comes free. They'll tell you heroin tastes like icecream

Ben Harper - Diamonds on the Inside
So tell me why the first to ask is the last one to give every time
What you say and do not mean, it follows you close behind.

Dave Matthews - Grace is Gone
Excuse me please one more drink
Can you make it strong cos I don't need to think she
She broke my heart there's no way out
One more drink I'll be gone.

Right that's all I can think of now...just got back from the pub, so if you've got something to add then, go nuts.

Right so I know I'm a bit late with this but it needed some thought. I've gone for personal favourites rather than ones you may know.

Some are just lines - some are entire songs I'd say.

Maximo Park - Nosebleed

Some people hide their emotions
And some people show too much
I'm looking for somewhere central
Now isn't it obvious

He changed his look for you
You changed your life for him
Now was the verdict worth the trial?

Starsailor - Some Of Us

My wandering soul found solace at last,
I wanted to know how long it would last.
She's losing control, she's coming down fast,
The heart that I stole, I'm not giving back, never giving back.

Tom Mcrae - A & B Song (this whole song rocks) (I could reel off lyrics after lyrics from the phenominal Mr Mcrae)

a's got a girl for each season, b's got a mail order bride,
a knows he's headed for salvation, b's afraid to die.
if hell is in the detail, babe, i'm a microscope,
i know i'll live to see you swinging, given enough rope.

Stereophonics - Traffic

Those are models legs, but are they women's, are they men's?

Sleeper - What Do I Do Now? (this whole song is wicked)

Quickly she came dressed up for fame
Riding her perfume downstairs
Make up like glue she danced round the room
To the sound of her corduroy flares
Lets go to town taxis all round
We could stop for a couple of beers
He looks at it all stifles a yawn
She tries not to look like she cares

Sleeper - Statuesque (I want this on a t-shirt)

I need high heels just to stand up

Stereophonics - A Thousand Trees

Only takes one tree, to make a thousand matches
Only takes one match, to burn A thousand trees

Like I couldn't mention this one

David Ford - Song for the Road

And I tip my hat to the angel of the North

ah got another one:

Turin Brakes

Walking through the park
I can see my shadow follow
He's a tragic little fellow
Cos he's always left behind

MTV snorefest

By Dave Anderson on Apr 29, 2008

The MTV awards is such a load of garbage. Take this report from SMH.

"Red carpet arrivals at Australia Technology Park in Redfern were almost a bigger event than the awards themselves, with stars parading for more than two hours before hundreds of screaming fans and a horde of worldwide media crews.

Take a look at the crowd in the background. Hardly cheering widely.

Support indie CD stores

By Dave Anderson on Apr 26, 2008

CD store

I read recently that in the US they had a support the bricks and mortar CD store day. As the stores lose out to the larger online shops and the exponential rise of piracy the little independent store loses out.

I love my local CD store's recommendations. I love putting those old headphones on and flicking through new music. It's a sense of adventure and discovery. I also love that local CD stores support local musicians.

I'm all for people purchasing and getting into music online as well as in the store, but if I have a choice I chose to feel the cover, talk to the staff and feel part of a community.

Perhaps we should have a bricks and mortar CD store day. I'm going to Fish and suggest it!

Twitter updates

By Dave Anderson on Apr 19, 2008

I've been using Twitter for status updates. At first I thought it was rather pointless, if it wasn't hooked into Facebook or something like that, but now I'm starting see some value. Firstly, it's funny to read back over your own stupid updates. I've reminded myself how good Wilco's Blue Sky Blue album is, I've remembered not to eat a whole bag of Kool Fruits and I've also reminded myself how great Saturday morning coffee's are.

The other cool thing is when you have people from your area hooked up on it. Not that I should care but this guy started following me, so I started following him. For some stupid reason I find it interesting that he has two kids, works in finance and had dinner at a restaurant in Walsh Bay last night. I wonder what it was like?

Skimping on artwork?

By Dave Anderson on Apr 17, 2008

A good friend of mine has been busy designing the artwork for my album, including posters, merchandise etc etc. I've put quite a lot of attention into the look and feel of my artwork, and a lot has really come down to the CD. But does the artwork on the CD really matter anymore?

I think it does and as such I've gone back to browsing my itunes by album cover instead of name. Perhaps I just suffered by being one of the generation who had the green faced ipods without images. It's definately a lot slower but I just feel so much more fulfilled seeing the image and hearing the tunes.

Now I wonder how Glen is going with the final artwork best find out.

I think that cover art is still important in the ipod generation, but it needs to be something that works in small scale. CD covers don't have the generous real estate that LP covers offered and on an ipod screen, you've got even less area to work with and with some older covers you really notice missing the detail.

Is Missy Higgins gay?

By Dave Anderson on Oct 30, 2007

Seems to be a lot of questions on whether the famous female singer/songwriter Missy is in fact gay? Should we throw Thorpey in the fray as well? Do you even really care?

I have no opinion as to whether or not she is. I think it's great that the media haven't chased her down to find out. From a marketing perspective, by not stating one way or another, your bases are covered. You won't be hated by anti homosexuals and you hold a special place in the heart's of those that are.

I guess we all like to know that we have some chance right...like Nottinghill or something...only kidding of course!

I have no real point to make to this post except I've read a lot on the topic. Just an interesting point that they 'may' feel that if they announced to the world they were gay, they stand isolating sponsors and the public.

At the end of the day I like her music...and Thorpey can swim. That's probably the most important things for me.

Here is a recent article on it as well:http://www.smh.com.au/news/music/missy-higgins-tells-magazine-shes-not-so-straight/2007/11/17/1194767028924.html

Creativity just got shuffled

By Dave Anderson on Oct 24, 2007

I'm currently recording a CD and I'm thinking long and hard about which songs and where to put them. But do you care? Seems everbody these days just throws all the albums into one mixing pot and then flicks through getting fustrated that the one's they want don't come up.

I can't talk. I did that for a while. But then I couldn't remember a memorable album. I couldn't remember where I was when I heard it the first time, and how it made me feel. It was like a missed a whole year out of my musical life, and it lacked inspiration, and I couldn't talk to others about it. I just wasn't giving the album's the justice, the time required for it to make an impression.

For example. I remember lying on the couch listening to Damien Rice 'O' and really listening and just feeling...not sure what I was feeling but I guess you could just feel the emotion. I remember feeling lost and a bit lonely listening to Epicure's Goodbye Girl whilst living in London. I remember my summer album of '00 was Counting Crows This Desert Life. Then there was the whole David Ford co-incidence. Seeing an article, buying the album, realising his name was on my Gomez poster, and then meeting him at the pub. It was a pretty cool story. Check it out.

So now if I buy CD's online, I burn them to a disk and give them the justice they deserve. Don't banish songs into cyberspace by deleting them from the album, or rearrange them to suit. That's like removing the statue of David's penis, or changing the background on Mona Lisa.

The artist put it that way for a reason. This is their expression not yours. Not everything should be user generated. Something should be left alone.

I hope when my CD comes out you do the same for me.

Are we playing for Cyberspace?

By Dave Anderson on Oct 18, 2007

An interesting phenomenon has been going on in the past week. The www.wotnext.com.au film crew have been out and about at Woo Jam and at my Hopetoun gig last night. Firstly at Woo Jam, somebody must have got news that a film crew was going to be there as the place was jammed full...no spots left for yours truely to play.

Then last night. It was fairly quiet in the pub. Brendan McLean, opened the evening with some theatrical inspired songs that would make Tim Freedman proud, if not concerned that he is about to be super seeded.

We were up next...

Then a great band called Lover finished the night.

Now if this is Sydney's premier indie music venue for local bands then this city might as well shut up shop and move to Melbourne. Not a punter insight despite the fantastic music on offer.

Is it a lack of communication or are people more interested in downloading snippets to their mobiles? Would you rather a webcast so you can watch it when ever you want in your pj's, sipping your coffee?

I'm all for the advent of technology but let me share with you the one thing you won't get online. Normal human contact and conversation.

For instance
The bar tender last night, he works in Marketing Comms, for a theatre company. Turns out he used to write for Rolling Stone but there wasn't much money in it. He liked my last song the most. He also said I was special because not many people drink Cascade Premium.

Taylor, she's a friend of a friend of mine. She works in finance and is also passionate about singing. She has been attending Classical Opera classes for nearly 2 years and thinks her teacher is brilliant. She thought I could open up a bit more which is a good observation (felt the sound was too loud last night to let rip).

Charles, he has some new ideas for my film clip...he always has new ideas which is great. He thinks the Hopetoun is the best bar in Sydney. I never realised how much he liked music.

Basically what I'm getting at is you won't experience much if you don't talk to people. If you want to be distant then move to an island. One with high speed bandwith I'd suggest.

Good luck.

Is Dave Matthews autistic?

By Dave Anderson on Oct 13, 2007

Dave Matthews for those that aren't familiar is one of the highest earning entertainers in the world. Relatively unknown outside of the U.S. this you would assume makes him pretty damn popular in the states.

I would have to say he is one of the most brilliant musicians, especially live which he has been built up over years of touring colleges (I believe this is what he does religiously). He also a very unique style on the guitar, playing some relatively unkown chords and his dancing....well it's funky but not quite orthodox.

Listening to him talk between songs, being so creative, having a slightly unusual dancing style...I don't think that makes autistic. Yes he is brilliant and I'm sure a number of brilliant people throughout time have been labeled somewhat 'special'.

A definition from wiki suggests:
"Autism is a brain development disorder characterised by impairments in social interaction and communication".

As somebody that can pull in excess of 100,000 people to a concert, blow them away, and leave them begging for more I would have to say he has an advanced social interaction and communication ability not an impaired one.

Don't forget he is a rock star. he has been able to live and breathe a world where people hang off everything he says and does. This allows him to take his creativity to all new levels, and to play with you more than you think...because at the end of the day he is entertaining!

I must admit I've seen him come across as somewhat different, and it has crossed my mind. What do you think?

As long as he's happy, he shouldn't have to change.

Video Killed the Radio Star

By Dave Anderson on Oct 11, 2007

I guess it would have made sense to have had a video of some sort rather than a static picture but what's done is done. Anyway...I thought music video's were dead. I guess I was put off by overgrown kids talking up Avril Lavigne video's with stupid hair cuts, shocking accents, and questions that a year 4 would cringe at. Yes MTV and Video Hits is who'm I'm slagging off.

But...then...the mobile evolution kicked in. I mean we all need something to view whilst waiting for a bus, sitting in a meeting, or um....taking a lavatory break. So it's refreshing to see a website that is promoting 'unsigned' music www.wotnext.com.au. Normally I'm reserved about these sites that act as though they are promoting but are yet offering fake hope, but to see a friend's band The Falls on top the charts is super.

So...the lovely Monique from wotnext.com.au and who also happens to come from Perth (have we all left?) emailed me and said she liked my stuff (ok I did say I'm not overly swayed right?) and she wants a video. So I'm recording this weekend.

What do you think? Are video's are waste of time. I only really watch DVD's of artists not video clips, but I guess if they are easily accessible, and I'm um...needing to go to the mens...then you never know. You could just be watching me....that's a strange thought.

Greedy Record Companies

By Dave Anderson on Oct 5, 2007

How's this...

Woman Fined $247,000 for sharing 24 songs
10:27am | In the first US trial for illegal music downloading, a single mother is fined $US220,000 for sharing 24 songs online.

I'm all for tighter control on online sharing, however this fine is just ridicilous. In an era where everybody was sharing music at one point or another how can they justify such a fine. Is buying a book and passing it onto a friend to read a crime?

Record companies are money hungry marketing machines. I need piece of mind to know that as an independent musician, I can make some earning out of selling my music, but I hope it's in the moral's of the individual to decide that the time I put into my music and the quality is worth spending money.

I wonder if the artists are going to see any of the $247k. Doubt it.
