I’ve decided to drop my prices at live gigs. Oh not just discount, I mean get rid of price all together. Back to old school, you pay what you think it’s worth philosophy.
I read this really interesting post on it here. I tend to agree. I’ve often felt as though I need to discount my CD at gigs to $10 to get people to buy. But I often get people say no $20 is more deserving.
I’m sure I’m going to get the odd person saying $2…but you know that’s fine. Those that geniunely want my CD, and who are geniunely interested in music, will see some reasoning behind paying a figure that is deserving. If I was playing Acer Arena I’d probably reconsider this offer. Besides they might then go and tell a whole heap of people that I’m a nice guy and they should support me.
I guess it has to do with that personal connection. Which is why I don’t think I’ll extend this offer to the internet just yet. There is a certain level of honesty involved in a face to face transaction that is lost online. I’m sure people would quite happily order my CD’s for 5c and not think anything of it.
But I guess the concept is that it’s unlikely they will do it to me in person, or someone who is selling on my merch stand. Most people that come to my gigs understand my passion, they get that it’s a hard industry, and that their money makes a massive difference to the future prospects of me as musician!
Hopefully see you at a gig soon. Oh don’t worry I’ll be sure to mention the cost and time associated with making a CD just to keep you honest ; )
